Data Exchange

Introduction

The Data Exchange provides Flywheel Enterprise users a powerful and efficient way to supplement their existing datasets. Users can browse a catalog of diverse, high quality, publicly licensed datasets and import chosen data, pre-curated and ready for analysis, to a specific Flywheel Enterprise instance.

Datasets on the Data Exchange are organized according to Flywheel’s hierarchy, classified consistently by modality, anatomy, contrast, and orientation and enhanced with additional metadata (e.g. cohort demographic information) where possible.

The Data Exchange provides the biomedical research community a solution to find high quality, curated data that meets targeted cohort demographics, modalities, and other statistical characteristics across multiple organizations, studies, or projects.

Features

The Key Features are as follows:

  • Access to a growing catalog of publicly licensed datasets
  • e.g. Datasets published on The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS), Autism Brain Imaging Data Exchange (ABIDE), Medical Segmentation Decathlon
  • Dataset summaries
  • Data description and purpose
  • Cohort demographic information
  • Data format and modalities
  • Project metadata
  • Catalog search capabilities
  • Full free text search
  • Taxonomy filters
  • Import capabilities
  • Direct import to Flywheel Enterprise sites
  • Elimination of data staging, ingestion and curation
  • No data movement

Constraints

N/A

Problems and Resolutions

The Data Exchange addresses the following problems:

  • Finding high quality, curated data is challenging
  • Larger, more diverse data cohorts are needed for Research and Development (R&D)
  • Physically moving data from site to site is limiting productivity
  • Transfer agreements
  • Extra PHI risk
  • Extra cost

The above challenges are resolved by the Data Exchange as follows:

  • A decentralized platform that catalogs data
  • High quality Real World Data (RWD)
  • Easy access to curated data
  • Data is referenced in place
  • Low impact on data footprint
  • Cost savings in data storage

Instruction Steps

Once signed on to the Flywheel Enterprise platform, go to the left hand bar on the page and scroll to Collaboration as seen below.

The following information is included with each dataset:

  • Dataset name
  • Access type
  • Data provider logo and name
  • Version number and date
  • A snippet of the dataset description
  • File types
  • Dataset size
  • Number of subjects

Dataset Details Page

Once a Dataset Summary Tile is clicked, the Dataset Details Page for the selected dataset will be displayed with the following information:

  • Data provider
  • Version number and date
  • Import button and dataset size
  • Keywords
  • Dataset description
  • Subject, Session and Acquisition counts
  • File types
  • Modalities
  • Cohort demographic information

The image below highlights certain information on the Dataset Details Page.
