Deprecation of flywheel-gear-toolkit

Change

The flywheel-gear-toolkit Python package is deprecated and will reach end-of-life on December 31, 2026. After this date, the package will no longer receive updates, bug fixes, or security patches.

The fw-gear package is the official successor to flywheel-gear-toolkit and should be used for all new gear development.

Description Deprecated Package Replacement
Gear Development Toolkit flywheel-gear-toolkit fw-gear

Reason For Change

The fw-gear package provides significant improvements over flywheel-gear-toolkit:

  • Simplified APIs: More intuitive interfaces that reduce boilerplate code
  • Better documentation: Comprehensive guides and examples for gear development
  • Modern Python support: Built with modern Python practices and type hints
  • Improved SDK integration: Better interoperability with the Flywheel SDK
  • Active development: New features and improvements are only added to fw-gear

For new gear development: Use fw-gear for all new gears. See the fw-gear documentation to get started.

For existing gears using flywheel-gear-toolkit: We recommend migrating existing gears to fw-gear before December 31, 2026. See the migration guide for step-by-step instructions.

Timeline:

  • Now: Begin planning migration for existing gears
  • December 31, 2026: End of support for flywheel-gear-toolkit
